NESSBE 2019: NORTHEAST SUMMIT FOR A SUSTAINABLE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Social justice in the built environment

Friday, March 8, 2019
Kroon Hall, Yale University, New Haven, CT

NESSBE (Northeast Summit for a Sustainable Built Environment) is a biennial northeast regional summit meant to include a larger community of building professionals, owners, academics, policymakers and advocates in a conversation about sustainability in the built environment. The theme of the second NESSBE is Equity of Place: Social Justice in the Built Environment. The focus areas are material health and social justice, climate justice and conservation, resilience, community engagement, and affordable housing.

This event is building upon the first NESSBE held in April 2017 with the theme Health of Place: Health and Wellbeing in the Built Environment, which was a great success. The organizers are The Connecticut Green Building Council (CTGBC) and Living Building Challenge: Connecticut Collaborative (LBC CT) with the help of the Yale Office of Sustainability, and the Ludwig Center for Community & Economic Development.

PRAISE FOR THE FIRST NESSBE

"The speakers and participants came from a wide array of areas of expertise and focus.  Hearing how others work toward building sustainable communities and buildings within different frameworks gave me take-aways that continue to inform my own work."  Becky Nichols, Pirie Associates

"It was a great networking event and opportunity to share ideas with committed people." Matt Root, Integrated Eco Strategy

"NESSBE offered several interesting workshops, a host of networking opportunities, and hands-on collaboration with experts and passionate people with whom I still communicate today!"  Kristen Coperine, Green Thread Consulting

"NESSBE helped me understand where sustainability and resiliency is heading and allowed me to meet with practice leaders and experts." Wayne Cobleigh, GZA

"The sessions were forward thinking and thought provoking. I have never made it to the west coast for Living Future so this was a great local alternative."

GREEN EVENT CERTIFICATIONS

Organizing an event with sustainability in its name demands concrete action from the organizers. The CTGBC and Connecticut Collaborative take this commitment seriously.

Additionally, we’ve taken the following steps in planning:

  • Promoting carpooling, biking, and public transportation

  • Limiting printing, reusing materials, and printing double-sided where possible

  • Printing on recycled paper with soy based or recycled inks.

  • Selecting local food, beer, and wine
